After Christmas in 2024, we took an incredible vacation up to the far north of Sweden. Sheer luck landed us in what the FT described as "the best place in the world to see the aurora", a small town named Abisko, Sweden. It's on the edge of a national park which is also a snow desert, which means few clouds and clear skies for aurora viewing. Arriving on New Year's Day, we were coming in hot on the back half of some strong solar weather and a significant CME, which meant pulling over on the side of the road for photographs multiple times on the way from Kiruna up to Abisko. The first couple photos are taken from the road complete with passing headlights, but thankfully old memories came back quickly from prior night time photography, and the shots quickly turned up gold. We feel so lucky to have seen such an incredible phenomenon in a strikingly stunning location.
